Country rank #5

Indonesia 印度尼西亚

The largest population — a shrinking middle class

Indonesia has Southeast Asia's largest population and digital market, but the middle-class share is falling, so the consumption-upgrade story needs a discount — like India, only the macro layer checks out this round.

Why this country

On BPS figures, GDP grew 5.11% in 2025, the population is 284.7 million, digital-economy GMV is about USD 100 billion (up roughly 14%), and FDI inflows were USD 22.3 billion. The problem is structural: the middle class fell from 21.5% of the population in 2021 to 17.1% by end-2024, and FDI concentrates in capital-intensive downstream mining with limited pull on middle-class employment. Unit economics for specific industries were not verified this round — observe first, conclude later.

Like India, Indonesia stays on the watchlist: 284.7 million people and roughly USD 100 billion of digital-economy GMV are the scale base, but the middle-class share dropped 4.4 percentage points in four years and the consumption story is thinning. The precondition for the next research step is industry-level unit economics — until returns, costs and foreign-access rules for one specific industry are verified, nothing is boarded and no entry route is given.
